Let’s take this opportunity to revisit the Black Canary’s on-screen history, and rank each live-action version from worst to best.Jurnee Smollett is an award-winning actress and activist of rare talent and conviction. Unfortunately, the series wasn’t picked up and her cinematic future was thrown into question after Birds of Prey‘s underperformance and the DC Universe reset (though it seems Smollett is still going to play the character in her own standalone movie). Though we’ve seen her dominate the comic book, TV and video game landscapes over the years, Dinah finally made her cinematic debut in 2020’s Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn) in which she was portrayed by Jurnee Smollett.Ģ020 was a good year for the Canary, with the character co-headlining that film and two versions set to headline Arrowverse TV series Green Arrow and The Canaries. Perhaps the most-skilled fighter in all of DC Comics, she’s also renowned for her patented Canary Cry – a highly-effective sonic scream that incapacitates (and temporarily deafens) anyone she unleashes it on. Since then, the Dinah Laurel Lance version of the character has gone on to get involved in some of the company’s most historic storylines, becoming a founding member of the Justice League and the Birds of Prey and the primary love interest of Oliver Queen/Green Arrow. A long-standing character, she made her comic book debut all the way back in 1947 when she appeared in Issue 86 of Flash Comics. Black Canary finally made her big-screen debut in Birds of Prey, but just where does Jurnee Smollett’s performance rank among her fellow Canaries?īlack Canary is undoubtedly one of DC Comics’ most iconic heroes. ![]() Arrow - “Lost Souls” - Image AR406B_0237b.jpg - Pictured: Katie Cassidy as Laurel Lance - Photo: Cate Cameron/ The CW - é 2015 The CW Network, LLC.

![]() He is such a sadistic jerk that it’s nearly impossible not to become one too when it comes to him. The only reward for reading the entire book (instead of chucking it) is the promise that the narrator will get his comeuppance - and the reader will get to enjoy his pain. And that’s how the book fails the reader. That’s not a demolition derby! Instead, it’s a disappointment when a crash was what you were expecting. There is only a small scuff on each bumper. There’s no loud boom, no crunching metal and plastic, no fluid hissing from under the hoods - and no shattering glass. They hit head on, but in the split second before they do, they slow to a few miles per hour. Two cars are traveling toward each other at 100 miles per hour in some twisted version of a demolition derby. It’s not written in a way that is even close to enough. But when she finally delivers the blows that level him, it’s not satisfying enough. It’s even revealed long before he introduces Ainsley to the reader. The narrator makes no secret of this throughout most of the book. To make a long-winded story short, Ainsley does to him what he did to women in London. His paranoia continues to grow when he visits New York City on business and meets the beautiful Ainsley. Among other crazy things, he believes his employer is out to get him. Instead, his narcissism continues to shine through, along with a large dose of paranoia. At this point in the story is when the narrator might have had a ‘come to Jesus’ moment or redeemed himself in some other way. While in Minnesota, he’s sober and woman-free. When his narcissism fuels a career move, he relocates from London to Minnesota, USA. He seemingly gets off on his ‘power’ to get women to fall hard for him, knowing he will subsequently break their hearts and scar them. ![]() Not physically, as he explains, but emotionally. It’s simply the story of an alcoholic, sadistic narcissist who admittedly enjoys hurting women. Reading more like a fiction novel, the book is nothing spectacular in its writing or content. “Diary of an Oxygen Thief” was first self-published in 2006 as a purported autobiography by an unknown author. Nonetheless, the three are sentenced to death. In his closing statement, Dax denounces the proceedings. There is no formal written indictment, a court stenographer is not present, and the court refuses to admit evidence that would support acquittal. ![]() The last man, Private Arnaud, is chosen at random, despite having been cited for bravery twice previously.ĭax, who was a criminal defense lawyer in civilian life, volunteers to defend the men at their court-martial. The artillery commander refuses to fire without written confirmation of the order. Mireau, enraged, orders his artillery to open fire on them to force them onto the battlefield. None of the men reach the German trenches, and B Company refuses to leave their own trench after seeing that violent defeat. Dax leads the first wave of soldiers over the top into no man's land under heavy fire. The next morning, the attack on the Anthill is a failure. ![]() Corporal Paris, the other soldier on the mission, confronts Roget, who denies any wrongdoing and falsifies his report to Colonel Dax. Overcome by fear while waiting for the man's return, Roget lobs a grenade, accidentally killing the scout. ![]() Mireau leaves the planning of the attack to Colonel Dax, despite Dax's protests that the only result of the attack will be to weaken the French Army with heavy losses for no benefit.īefore the attack, drunken Lieutenant Roget leads a night-time scouting mission, sending one of his two men ahead. In the trenches, Mireau throws a private out of the regiment for showing signs of shell shock.
